Outdoor Lighting for Gardens, Patios and Pathways
A garden that looks lovely by day can feel like an afterthought once the sun goes down, and the right outdoor lighting is what keeps it usable well into the evening. Whether you need practical lighting along a path, a warm glow over a dining area, or subtle accent lights to highlight planting, FastDaddyshop stocks garden lights and outdoor lighting to suit spaces of every size. On our site you can order solar-powered path lights under 30 cm tall for borders and walkways, festoon lighting stretching 10–20 metres for patios and pergolas, and wall-mounted spotlights rated for permanent outdoor installation.
Choosing outdoor lighting: what our customers ask most
- Solar or mains-powered lighting — which is better? Our consultants often advise solar lights for pathways and borders, since there's no wiring involved and they suit most UK gardens with reasonable daily sunlight, while mains-powered lighting gives more consistent brightness for dining areas used regularly after dark. From the experience of FastDaddyshop's managers, mains-powered is usually the better choice for lighting that needs to work reliably every evening, including through darker winter months.
- Do solar garden lights work well in a British winter? In practice, solar lights need at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight to charge fully, which shorter winter days often don't provide, so brightness and runtime can noticeably drop between November and February. We'd flag an expert caution: positioning matters more than most people expect, so avoid shaded spots even if they're more convenient for the layout.
- What IP rating should outdoor lights have? From experience, an IP44 rating is the minimum sensible standard for any light exposed to rain, while lights installed in more exposed spots benefit from IP65 or higher for genuine weatherproofing. Our managers have found checking this rating specifically prevents the most common early failures we see reported.
Once your outdoor lighting is in place, it's worth thinking about the rest of the garden after dark. Many of our customers add garden decor pieces that catch the light nicely, bring in fencing to define boundaries more clearly at night, or pair lighting with a fire pit or outdoor heater for genuinely usable evenings outside.
